SUMMARY:Green Hydrogen Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:Fuel of the future\nGreen hydrogen has become a cornerstone of Europe’s energy transition strategy. Technological and economic advances and explicit political and corporate support over the last two years have brought green hydrogen to the forefront of the energy and climate change agendas of many countries. Thus\, green hydrogen is poised to play a crucial role in realising net zero-emissions energy systems envisioned by 2050 by these nations. \nSupplying hydrogen to industrial users is now a major business around the world. Demand for hydrogen\, which has grown more than threefold since 1975\, continues to rise – almost entirely supplied from fossil fuels\, with 6% of global natural gas and 2% of global coal going to hydrogen production. \nWith revenues for green hydrogen projected to exceed $200 billion by 2027\, diverse opportunities will open up not only for renewable projects for its production\, but also to use it as a long-term energy storage technology\, to replace fossil fuels for mobility\, and to become a major part of manufacturing and process industries. The transition to green hydrogen could provide $11 trillion of infrastructure investment opportunities over the next 30 years making a global business focus. The number of countries with polices that directly support investment in hydrogen technologies is increasing\, along with the number of sectors they target

SUMMARY:Clean Hydrogen Conference
DESCRIPTION:Hydrogen can be used as a zero-emission fuel burned with oxygen. Hydrogen is a very important raw material of the future\, presently it is used as feedstock for fertilizer production and methanol production\, but more processes will adapt and the circular economy will enhance the role of hydrogen significantly.  As a renewable transport fuel the commercial use of Hydrogen has taken of in applications to replace diesel in public busses\, heavy transport and -moving ; \nAs the production of Hydrogen is energy intensive\, a direct connection to renewable energy sources is required. A lot of research and development is done to create Clean Hydrogen\, which can be done in two ways\, electrochemical and thermochemical. \nNormally\, green hydrogen is produced via water electrolysis on renewable power. Electrolysis is an excellent process to capture potential oversupply in green energy production and solve various problems of transporting this energy\, however its variable production and difficulty to transport and store provides a challenge for the chemical industry. Therefore alternatives should be developed since one can not solve all the hydrogen demand issues via electrolysis. \nThe alternative options to create clean hydrogen are: \n\nThe gasification of biomass towards hydrogen and green CO2\nPyrolysis\, a chemical recycling method\nThe splitting of natural gas in pure carbon and hydrogen\n\nDuring the Clean Hydrogen Conference the (inter)national speakers will present their view and experience on this fast developing market. \n  \nWho should attend: \n\nR&D / Innovation and General management of\n\nEnergy and Chemical companies\nBio mass suppliers\nPyrolysis industry\nRecycling value chain\n\n\nGovernmental bodies\nRegulatory institutions\nInvestors\nStart-Ups

SUMMARY:How to decarbonise heavy industry: from quick wins to long-term solutions - EURACTIV
DESCRIPTION:The steel industry is a major contributor to the overall CO2 emissions worldwide\, and\, therefore\, a significant driver of climate change. The sector generated about 2 billion tons of CO2 in 2018\, according to the International Energy Agency\, which is double the volume of 2000. \nIn recent years\, we have seen many initiatives – from energy efficiency (waste heat recovery) and circular economy initiatives (e.g. slag treatment) to hydrogen – to decarbonise industrial processes and economic sectors where reducing carbon emissions is both urgent and hard to achieve. This includes heavy-duty and long-range transport and energy-intensive industrial processes\, such as the iron and steel\, chemicals\, refining and cement industries. \nHydrogen is expected to play a key role in the future decarbonisation of the steel industry and other heavy industries. It can be used as a feedstock\, a fuel or an energy carrier and storage\, and has many possible applications across industry\, transport\, power and buildings sectors. Most importantly\, it does not emit CO2 and does not pollute the air when used. It is therefore seen as an important part of the solution to meet the 2050 climate neutrality goal of the European Green Deal. \nBut in the short- and medium-term\, governments and industries are looking more at circular economy and energy efficiency initiatives to drive down emissions from plants. How can policymakers create the right incentives to put both the 2030 and 2050 carbon targets within reach? And can this strengthen the EU industrial base at the same time? \nJoin this EURACTIV Virtual Conference to discuss the path towards the decarbonisation of the steel and other heavy industries\, where the focus should be in the short- and medium-term\, and what are the key enablers that we need to put in place. \nSource: EURACTIV \nSpeakers\nMette Koefoed Quinn\, Head of Unit\, ETS Implementation and IT\, DG CLIMA\, European Commission\nSirpa Pietikäinen\, MEP\, Member of ECON\, Substitute of ENVI\, European Parliament\nMax Åhman\, Senior Lecturer\, Environmental and Energy Systems Studies\, Lund University\nAlexander Fleischanderl\, Technology Officer Upstream and Head of Environmental Solution Business\, Primetals Technologies \n\nModerator: Frederic Simon\, Energy Editor\, EURACTIV \n\nSchedule\n09:30 – 09:35 Welcome\n09:35 – 09:50 Panellists’ statements\n09:50 – 10:40 Discussion and Q&A\n10:40 – 10:45 Closing statements \n

SUMMARY:Bioeconomy and the Green Deal: matching Europe’s climate neutrality and competitiveness goals? POLITICO
DESCRIPTION:Hitting the EU’s 2050 climate neutrality targets means a steady decline in the use of fossil fuels — and that poses a crucial question: How can the industry produce everything from jet fuel to plastics and textiles? One possible answer is a radical rethinking of our consumer society and a need for those things. Another is to figure out how some of the products can be made with a smaller environmental impact. That’s where the bioeconomy comes in — promising to use biomass ranging from crops and forestry to algae to make biogas\, biofuel\, sustainable textiles and plastics\, among others. The rationale is that such processes have a smaller impact on the environment and can help make law-carbon goods to substitute fossil ones\, but many climate campaigners are skeptical. That creates opportunities and challenges for governments\, industry and consumers to get involved. \nKey questions to be addressed include: \n\nWhat is the role of bioeconomy in the EU Green Deal and how can it contribute to the EU’s competitiveness and resilience?\nIs it a long-term solution to climate and environmental concerns? Or could the bioeconomy lead to further industrialization of agriculture and forestry?\nHow can the industry and policymakers ensure that fossil-based materials are substituted with more sustainable\, bio-based equivalent in the packaging\, plastics or textile sectors among others\, while avoiding creating unsustainable pressures on natural resources like biomass?\nWhat are the governance mechanisms needed to ensure the bioeconomy is sustainable in the long-term? How could these be translated into policymaking?\nWhat is the EU doing to move from R&D to scaling up bioeconomy projects? Does the EU have a particular role to play in backing such an effort or should it be done at a national level?\n\nIn light of the upcoming revised EU forest and industrial strategies\, POLITICO convenes a frank discussion with policymakers\, industry and climate experts about the role of the bioeconomy in a climate neutral and competitive Europe. \nSource: POLITICO \nMore information here \nAgenda \n• 4:30 Welcome remarks by POLITICO’s moderator\n\n\n\nJan Cienski\, senior policy editor\, POLITICO \n\n\n\n\n• 4:35 Introductory remarks by our partner\n\n\n\nJori Ringman\, director general\, Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI) \n\n\n\n 4:40One-to-One Interview \n\nVirginijus Sinkevičius\, European commissioner for environment\, oceans and fisheries \n\n\n\nModerated by Jan Cienski\, senior policy editor\, POLITICO  \n\n\n\n• 5:00 PPanel discussion followed by Q&A\n\nFranc Bogovič (EPP\, Slovenia)\, co-chair of the bioeconomy working group of the European Parliament intergroup on climate change\, biodiversity and sustainable development \nJoanna Drake\, deputy director general\, DG Environment\, European Commission\nHannah Mowat\, campaigns coordinator\, FERN\nJussi Pesonen\, chief executive officer\, UPM\n\nModerated by Louise Guillot\, reporter\, POLITICO  \n•  5:45 Closing remarks\n  \n
